Every corrugated gaylord box is built from two components: linerboard (the smooth inner and outer surfaces) and fluting (the wavy layer between them). Fluting comes in several grades — A, B, C, E, and F — each offering different benefits:
- A & C Flutes: Thicker, excellent stacking strength
- B, E & F Flutes: Thinner, improved cushioning and reinforcement
Higher-ply boxes offer significantly greater strength in both tests, making them ideal for heavy, dense or high-value loads.
Box strength is measured in two key ways:
- Edge Crush Test (ECT) — determines stacking strength and how much vertical pressure a box can withstand.
- Mullen Test — measures burst strength, or the pressure required to rupture the box wall.
